0 When a woman is pregnant, a baby grows inside her womb for about nine months before it is born. 1 Grown-ups often say "we're expecting" instead of "pregnant". 2 Many parents wait about three months before telling people, because the early weeks are the most uncertain. 3 In Melbourne, Mum smiles at Dad over dinner and says, "We've got some news. 4 We're expecting." Soon there is a grey fuzzy scan picture on the fridge, a date circled on the calendar and a list of names nobody can agree on. 5 Midwives and doctors check on mum and baby all the way through. 6 Usually all goes well, but sometimes a pregnancy ends early and the baby is lost, which is very sad and nobody's fault. 7 "We're expecting" means a baby is growing inside Mum and will be born in a few months. 8 "The bump" is the round belly of a pregnant woman, made by the baby, the water around it and the stretched womb. 9 You should always ask before touching someone's bump. 10 A scan picture is made by a machine that uses sound waves to see the baby inside the body without hurting. 11 Morning sickness is feeling or being sick in early pregnancy, and despite the name it can happen at any time of day. 12 Morning sickness usually gets better after about three or four months, and it is not catching. 13 The due date is the doctors' best guess of the birth day, and babies can come up to two weeks before or after it. 14 "It's time, we're going to the hospital" means labour has started and the baby is getting ready to be born. 15 Labour can take many hours, so a grandparent or friend often comes to look after the older children. 16 A midwife is a nurse trained to care for women and babies during pregnancy, birth and the first days after. 17 Parents often make a shortlist of names, and the name must be registered officially within a few weeks of the birth. 18 A miscarriage is when a baby stops growing and dies early in pregnancy; it happens quite often and is nobody's fault. 19 Twins are two babies from one pregnancy; identical twins come from one egg that split, so they look alike. ← previous Gran, cousins and the whole wide familynext → A new baby in the house↑ back to Adult life This page in Markdown → https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/school/adult-life/18-were-having-a-baby/
