The native Albanian name for Western Kosovo is Dukagjini or Dukagjini plateau (Rrafshi i Dukagjinit), having been in use since the 15th–16th century as part of the Sanjak of Dukakin with its capital Peja, and is named after the medieval Albanian Dukagjini family.
