ewe
part of speech
noun (a ewe, ewes)
meaning for a pupil
A female sheep. tree →
sense in the lessons
In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: A ewe is a female sheep in the flocks of the patriarchs, here the seven ewe-lambs Abraham gave Abimelech. In the Writings it is also a shepherd's flock, and the Song of Songs compares a bride's teeth to a flock of ewes. Interpretation: Abraham's seven ewe-lambs were a witness to his well at Beer-sheba, and the rabbis connect the number seven with the oath that gave the place its name. David the shepherd, taken from following the ewes, is read as showing that God chooses humble leaders. In the primary lessons: On farms and in science lessons about animals, a ewe is the mother sheep, a ram is the male and a lamb is the baby; in maths problems farmers count ewes and their lambs. Phrases: «a ewe and her lamb», «ewes and rams».
