part of speech

noun (a horseman, horsemen); feminine: horsewoman, horsewomen

meaning for a pupil

1) A horseman is a man who rides a horse, especially one who rides well. tree →

2) A horseman is a soldier or traveller on horseback in history and stories. tree →

3) (Bible) The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are four riders in the Book of Revelation who stand for war, famine, disease and death. tree →

sense in the lessons

Interpretation: Nahum paints a picture of an attacking army to show the fall of Nineveh. The tradition reads it as God's judgment on a cruel city. In the primary lessons: In history lessons horsemen are cavalry, knights, messengers and nomad riders such as the Mongols. In stories a horseman galloping in often brings news or danger; «the Headless Horseman» is the ghost in «The Legend of Sleepy Hollow». In everyday life it means a good rider. Phrases: «a skilled horseman», «a lone horseman», «the Four Horsemen».

examples

  • The horseman charging, and the flashing sword, and the glittering spear; and a multitude of slain, and a heap of carcases; and there is no end of the corpses, and they stumble upon their corpses; (Prophets NAM.3.3, JPS 1917) tree →

note

Plural «horsemen», not «horsemans». A woman rider is a «horsewoman»; a neutral word is «rider» or «equestrian». «Horsemanship» is the skill of riding and caring for horses. In maths problems count horsemen as people: 6 horsemen means 6 people and 6 horses unless told otherwise (so 24 horse legs and 12 human legs).
