sense in the lessons

In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: In the story of David, "in jeopardy of their lives" means risking death. David poured out the water his men fetched at such risk. Interpretation: Tradition reads David's refusal to drink as an act of humility and reverence, because he treated the water as if it were blood and poured it out as an offering to God.

examples

  • And he said: 'Be it far from me, O LORD, that I should do this; shall I drink the blood of the men that went in jeopardy of their lives?' therefore he would not drink it. (Prophets 2SA.23.17, JPS 1917) tree →
