In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: The word is used in the list of women near of kin whom a man may not marry. In Proverbs it is used as a figure of speech, where understanding is called a close relative. Interpretation: The rabbis took these laws as setting the limits of family closeness and guarding the purity of the household. Proverbs 7:4 is read as urging a person to treat wisdom as a close family member.
