meaning for a pupil

1) Very strong or powerful. tree →

2) Very big and impressive: a mighty river, a mighty oak. tree →

3) (informal, mostly US) Very; really: "That's mighty kind of you." tree →

sense in the lessons

In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: Used of strong heroes such as Nimrod, of the growing Israelites, and of great waters. It also describes God's powerful acts. Interpretation: The Song at the Sea speaks of the "mighty waters". The rabbis discuss whether Nimrod's might was good or a rebellion against God. In the primary lessons: In stories "mighty" makes something sound grand, strong or heroic: a mighty king, a mighty roar, a mighty wave. In poems and the Bible it gives a big, old-style feel. The saying "The pen is mightier than the sword" means words and ideas can be stronger than fighting. "High and mighty" means acting proud and bossy. In the US South and in cowboy films "mighty" is a friendly way to say "very".

note

Forms: mighty, mightier, mightiest. Comes from the noun "might" (strength), not from the verb "might" (maybe). Trap: "mighty" (strong) has nothing to do with "might" in "I might go". As an adverb "mighty" is informal: say "very" in school writing.
