sense in the lessons

Interpretation: Sefer Yetzirah's summary says creation has "quantity" in the ten numbers (Sephirot) and "quality" in the twenty-two letters, together making thirty-two paths of wisdom. In the primary lessons: In science, quality is about what something is like (colour, texture) as opposed to quantity, how much there is. In everyday life we compare quality and price when shopping; "quality time" means time spent properly together. In stories, a character's qualities tell the reader what sort of person they are. Phrases: good quality, poor quality, quality control, quality time, high-quality, a leadership quality.

examples

  • The self-existing first cause called the creation into existence by quantity and quality; the former represented by ten numbers, (Sephiroth,) the latter by twenty-two letters, which form together thirty-two ways of the divine wisdom. (Sefer Yetzirah, Kalisch 1877) tree →
