sense in the lessons
In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: Threshing floors are mentioned as the place where grain gift offerings and the first portions were set apart. To thresh is also to beat grain, and the prophets use it as a picture of God crushing the nations in anger. Interpretation: The law of setting aside a portion of the harvest, and of dough (challah), is read as giving thanks to God for food. Ruth went to Boaz at the threshing-floor, where he winnowed barley. In the primary lessons: A farming and history word. Long ago farmers threshed grain by beating it with a flail on the barn floor; later steam threshing machines came round to farms; today combine harvesters cut and thresh at once. In The Wind in the Willows the countryside around has fields and barns where grain is threshed. Related: «threshold» — the old floor-board at a doorway.
