In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: Used for a place beneath, as under the tree or under the board. The Writings also use it in the grand phrases "under the whole heaven" and "under the sun," meaning everywhere in the world and in all human life. Interpretation: In Tradition, "under the sun" in Ecclesiastes means life in this world, while "under the whole heaven" says all things belong to God. In the primary lessons: In maths: a position, or less than a number (under 10, children under 5); «under» as an amount means less than and does not include the number. In science: animals that live under the ground; under water. Safety: children under 12 must sit in the back seat in many places. Phrases: under the bed, under water, under 5, under age, under way, under control, under construction.
