infinity

«infinity» in Mova's mysticism dictionary: the idea of something that has no end and goes on for… — its meaning for a pupil, its sense in the lessons and examples.

part of speech

noun (infinity, infinities)

meaning for a pupil

1) Infinity is the idea of something that has no end and goes on for ever, bigger than any number. tree →

2) (maths) Infinity is shown by the symbol ∞; counting numbers go on to infinity. tree →

3) An infinity of something is an extremely large or endless amount. tree →

sense in the lessons

In the mystic school: In notes 08 and 11 infinity is the 8 on its side, two opposite turnings that became one movement; and, without the zero, a string of ones running on forever "in a single state". In the primary lessons: In maths lessons, there is no biggest number: whatever number you say, you can add 1, so numbers go on to infinity. Infinity is not a normal number, so you cannot really do sums like infinity minus infinity. In space science, people wonder if the universe goes on to infinity. In stories, «to infinity and beyond» is a famous line from Toy Story. In religion, Christians believe God is infinite.

examples

  • On the projective line, plus infinity and minus infinity are a single point. (note 05) tree →
  • So a snake that crawls toward infinity forever will, at the end, meet its own tail coming the other way. (note 05) tree →
  • Every wave that leaves it travels the whole length of the body, turns by i at every joint, goes out past infinity, and comes back to the head as the tail. (note 05) tree →
  • Finally the note joins the inward 6 and the outward 9 end to end into an 8, two loops on one path; laid on its side it is ∞, and infinity is not a very large number but two opposite turnings that have learned to become one movement. (lesson 020) tree →
  • The note says the 8 laid on its side is ∞, that infinity is not a very large number, and that a collection of eight notes is in its own small way endless. (lesson 020) tree →
  • The symbol for infinity is ∞, like a sideways eight. tree →
  • Numbers go on to infinity. tree →
  • There is no largest number because counting goes on to infinity. tree →
  • «To infinity and beyond!» shouted Buzz Lightyear. tree →
  • Two mirrors facing each other seem to show reflections going to infinity. tree →
  • The universe may stretch to infinity. tree →
  • There are an infinity of possible stories. tree →

note

Usually uncountable. Adjective: infinite. Trap: infinity is not a number you can reach; infinity + 1 is still infinity. Some infinities are bigger than others (a mathematician called Cantor showed this).
