angle

«angle» in Mova's school dictionary: the space or turn between two lines that meet at a point… — its meaning for a pupil, its sense in the lessons and examples, with 5 sentences of Mova's corpora that use it.

part of speech

noun (an angle, angles); verb (angle, angles, angled, angling)

meaning for a pupil

1) An angle is the space or turn between two lines that meet at a point; it is measured in degrees. tree →

2) An angle is a corner, or the direction from which you look at something: «from this angle». tree →

3) An angle is a way of thinking about a problem or story: «Look at it from a different angle.» tree →

4) To angle something is to point it slightly sideways; to angle is also to fish with a rod and line. tree →

sense in the lessons

In maths, angles are measured with a protractor: a right angle is 90°, an acute angle is less than 90°, an obtuse angle is between 90° and 180°, a straight angle is 180°, and a full turn is 360°. Angles in a triangle add up to 180°, and in a four-sided shape to 360°. In everyday life you angle a mirror or a lamp; in sport you angle a shot. Phrases: «right angle», «at an angle», «from every angle», «angle for» (try to get something without asking directly).

examples

  • A square has four right angles. tree →
  • Measure the angle with a protractor. tree →
  • The angles in a triangle add up to 180 degrees. tree →
  • An acute angle is smaller than a right angle. tree →
  • The picture is hanging at an angle. tree →
  • From this angle the house looks huge. tree →
  • Try looking at the problem from another angle. tree →
  • He angled the mirror so he could see the road. tree →
  • Not long afterwards the two sisters went to angle in the brook, meaning to catch fish for dinner. tree →

note

Countable. Do not mix with «angel» (a spirit with wings): angLE vs angEL. Maths traps: the size of an angle does not depend on how long its lines (arms) are; 90° is a quarter turn. Angles on a straight line add to 180°; angles around a point add to 360°.
