coniferous

«coniferous» in Mova's school dictionary: Describing trees, such as pine, fir, spruce and larch… — its meaning for a pupil, its sense in the lessons and examples.

2) Describing a forest or woodland made mainly of these trees: «coniferous forest». tree →

sense in the lessons

In science and geography, pupils compare coniferous trees (cones, needles, mostly evergreen) with deciduous trees (broad leaves that fall in autumn). The huge coniferous forest of the far north is called the taiga or boreal forest (Canada, Scandinavia, Russia). Christmas trees are conifers. Phrases: «coniferous tree», «coniferous forest», «coniferous woodland», «coniferous and deciduous».

examples

  • Pine and spruce are coniferous trees. tree →
  • Coniferous trees have needles instead of flat leaves. tree →
  • Much of Canada is covered in coniferous forest. tree →

note

The noun is «conifer» (a coniferous tree). Trap: «coniferous» is not exactly the same as «evergreen». Most conifers are evergreen, but a few (larch) drop their needles, and some evergreens (holly) are not conifers. The opposite group in school is «deciduous». Said «kuh-NIF-er-us».
