sense in the lessons

In school maths: the signs that make up a number; problems ask about the tens digit, the ones digit, two-digit and three-digit numbers, the sum of the digits, or the largest number made from some digits; place value. In everyday life: a phone number or a PIN has digits; a digital clock shows the time in digits. Phrases: «two-digit number», «the tens digit», «single digits».

examples

  • Write the largest two-digit number. tree →
  • The tens digit of 58 is 5. tree →
  • Make a three-digit number using the digits 3, 7 and 1. tree →
  • What is the sum of the digits of 246? tree →

note

There are 10 digits, 0 to 9, but every number can be written with them. Maths: names a place in a number, not an amount: in 58 the digit 5 stands for 50. Trap: «the digit 5» and «the number 5» are not the same thing; «two-digit» tells the size of a number (10 to 99), not that there are two of something.
