part of speech

adjective; verb form (enlarge, enlarges, enlarged, enlarging)

meaning for a pupil

1) Made bigger: an enlarged photo. tree →

2) (medicine) Bigger than normal, often because of illness: an enlarged heart. tree →

3) (past of enlarge) Made something bigger: We enlarged the picture. tree →

sense in the lessons

In maths «enlarged» shapes keep the same angles but get longer sides — the scale factor tells you how many times bigger; in art and photocopying you enlarge pictures. Phrases: «enlarged by a scale factor of 2», «enlarged photo», «an enlarged copy».

examples

  • The triangle was enlarged by a scale factor of 3, so a 2 cm side became 6 cm. tree →
  • We enlarged the map so we could read it. tree →
  • The doctor said his tonsils were enlarged. tree →
  • The enlarged photo hung on the wall. tree →
  • The school enlarged the playground. tree →
  • Under a magnifying glass the ant looks enlarged. tree →
  • As he grew older he enlarged the hole, and slipped out two or three times every day to play with the little nobles in the town. tree →

note

Opposite: reduced. In maths, an enlargement by scale factor k multiplies every length by k (the area is multiplied by k × k). Enlarge = make larger; it does not change the shape.
