humidity

«humidity» in Mova's school dictionary: The amount of water vapour (invisible water in gas form)… — its meaning for a pupil, its sense in the lessons and examples.

part of speech

noun (humidity — uncountable; also «a humidity of 80%»)

meaning for a pupil

1) The amount of water vapour (invisible water in gas form) in the air. tree →

2) The damp, sticky, heavy feeling of air that holds a lot of water vapour, as on a hot muggy day. tree →

sense in the lessons

In science and geography humidity is part of weather and climate: it is measured with a hygrometer and is often given as «relative humidity» in percent — how full of water vapour the air is compared with the most it can hold at that temperature. High humidity makes hot days feel hotter because sweat dries slowly. Weather forecasts give humidity, and it matters for plants, rainforests, deserts and bathrooms. Phrases: high humidity, low humidity, relative humidity, humidity level.

examples

  • The humidity in the rainforest is very high, so everything feels damp. tree →
  • Deserts usually have low humidity. tree →
  • The weather app says the humidity is 85 percent today. tree →
  • High humidity makes it hard for sweat to dry, so we feel hot and sticky. tree →
  • We measured the humidity in the classroom with a hygrometer. tree →
  • Bread goes mouldy faster when the humidity is high. tree →
  • My hair goes frizzy in the humidity. tree →
  • Florida summers are famous for their heat and humidity. tree →

note

Uncountable: «the humidity is high», not «humidities» in everyday use. Adjective: «humid» (a humid day). In maths and science, relative humidity is a percentage from 0% (completely dry) to 100% (air holds all the water vapour it can; dew or fog may form). It is not the same as rainfall: air can be humid without rain. Opposite feeling: dry air.
