sense in the lessons

In stories "mighty" makes something sound grand, strong or heroic: a mighty king, a mighty roar, a mighty wave. In poems and the Bible it gives a big, old-style feel. The saying "The pen is mightier than the sword" means words and ideas can be stronger than fighting. "High and mighty" means acting proud and bossy. In the US South and in cowboy films "mighty" is a friendly way to say "very".

examples

  • The mighty lion roared across the plain. tree →
  • A mighty oak grows from a tiny acorn. tree →
  • The Amazon is a mighty river. tree →
  • "That's mighty nice of you, partner," said the cowboy. tree →

note

Forms: mighty, mightier, mightiest. Comes from the noun "might" (strength), not from the verb "might" (maybe). Trap: "mighty" (strong) has nothing to do with "might" in "I might go". As an adverb "mighty" is informal: say "very" in school writing.
