necessarily

«necessarily» in Mova's school dictionary: Used mostly in «not necessarily»: not always, not in… — its meaning for a pupil, its sense in the lessons and examples.

part of speech

adverb (necessarily)

meaning for a pupil

1) Used mostly in «not necessarily»: not always, not in every case. tree →

2) In a way that cannot be different; because it must be so. tree →

sense in the lessons

In maths, science and reasoning lessons it is a key thinking word: «A bigger box is not necessarily heavier» — one example does not prove a rule. In media literacy: «Popular is not necessarily true». It warns against jumping to conclusions.

examples

  • Big dogs are not necessarily scary. tree →
  • An expensive toy is not necessarily better. tree →
  • A longer word is not necessarily harder to spell. tree →
  • «Will it rain?» «Not necessarily.» tree →
  • Taller people do not necessarily run faster. tree →
  • Something on the internet is not necessarily true. tree →
  • A shape with four sides is not necessarily a square. tree →
  • “Will you please tell me if, on this island, there are places where one may eat without necessarily being eaten?” tree →

note

Spelling trap: one «c», double «s»: ne-ce-ss-ar-i-ly («one collar, two sleeves»). «Not necessarily» is softer than «no»: it means «sometimes yes, sometimes no». In maths, one counterexample shows a statement is not necessarily true.
