sense in the lessons

In everyday manners you say «Thanks!» or «Thanks a lot» when someone helps you or gives you something; «No, thanks» politely refuses. «Thanks to» explains a cause: «Thanks to the rain, the garden is green» (good or bad). In writing, a thank-you note or card says thanks for a present. In stories, characters give thanks at a feast; Thanksgiving is a holiday in the USA and Canada.

note

«Thanks» is plural with no singular: say «many thanks», not «a thank». «Thank you» is a bit more polite than «Thanks». «Thanks to» can be used for bad things too (Thanks to the traffic, we were late). «Thanks» as a verb form: she thanks him. Spell «thank you» as two words.
