Noun phrases in early Germanic languages
What it is about
The volume studies word order and structure inside the noun phrase in early Germanic: Old English, Old High German, Old Saxon, Old Icelandic and the older Germanic languages. The work rests on the NPEGL database, which annotates noun phrases in parsed corpora with category labels, and on counts of how they are patterned. Chapter 1 is about measurement: Pfaff gives a method for "patternization" that counts the distinct patterns of noun-phrase modifiers and how often each occurs. The chapter on modifiers (Bech and others) compares prenominal and postnominal adjectives and possessives across the four languages; the chapter's point is that the modifier orders differ between the languages, and that the factors behind the rarer positions are not the same in each. Bech's chapter on the Old English quantifiers fela and manig shows that fela mostly takes a partitive genitive, with agreement mainly in Ælfric's texts and the Peterborough Chronicle. Its semantics, concrete and countable nouns with a cardinal reading, predict the agreement cases. Fela disappeared from English by the mid twelfth century, while manig, which was always a modifier, survived.
Ideas
- I1. 19. The lexicon: vocabulary, multiword expressions and register and
world/src/dictionary.rs: find pairs of English words that are close in meaning but not in complementary distribution (as fela and manig were), and record which one a school text uses. This is a lexicon-level check, not a grammar rule. - I2. Pfaff's patternization count applied to Mova output: for each text, count the distinct noun-phrase modifier patterns from the parse (
en/src/parse.rs), with frequencies, and compare Early Modern English with modern EWT. Run twice and use a shuffled-order control. - I3. Rule for the partitive versus agreement construction in English (
many of themversusmany people): a decision list inen/src/morph.rsor the parse step, keyed on the head noun's countability and whetheroffollows. Measure it on UD EWT dev, where the head is marked.
For Mova
The chapters are 12. Pronouns, determiners and numerals (quantifiers, numerals, possessives) and 10. Vocabulary: archaic words and false friends (the older vocabulary). The code is en/src/parse.rs (patterns), world/src/dictionary.rs (the synonym check) and en/src/morph.rs. The measures: pattern diversity per text with a control, and the partitive-rule accuracy on UD EWT dev. The corpus-based counts are a model for Mova's own evaluation tables, not data to be built in.
