English Grammar (Wikibooks)
What it is about
A school grammar of English, arranged as lessons. Chapter 1 covers the basic parts of speech in seven lessons (nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, verbs, interjections). Chapter 3 covers phrases and clauses: prepositional phrases, phrases as adjectives and adverbs, participles, gerunds, infinitives, clauses, complements and modifiers, and sentence structures. A subject-and-predicate section follows, with a lesson on finding the subject. The layout follows a 1963 school grammar. The text is about 50 KB and has no numbers to report. Only the table of contents and the opening lines were read closely here. No text is copied; this card records the order of the lessons and the kinds of exercises they contain.
Ideas
- I1. Use the lesson order (parts of speech, then phrases, then clauses, then subject and predicate) as the curriculum skeleton of the school lessons in
world/src/knowledge.rs, so that each lesson's facts are checked against the grammar chapters that come before it. - I2. Write new test items for the lesson "determining parts of speech" (the same word in different roles, such as "round" as noun, adjective, verb or preposition). These items are our own, written from the concept, and test
en/src/ptag.rsanden/src/tag.rswith a held-out split. - I3. The lesson on finding the subject suggests a rule: the subject is the noun phrase that agrees with the finite verb. Implement it as a small decision list in
en/src/parse.rsand measure it againstnsubjon EWT dev, with a negative control that picks the nearest noun instead.
For Mova
The chapters are 10. Word classes, 22. Phrases: noun, adjective, adverb and prepositional phrases, 21. The simple clause and 11. Nouns. The code is world/src/knowledge.rs (lessons and tests) and en/src/ptag.rs. The measure is the accuracy of the new test items in I2 and the nsubj agreement of I3, both run twice for identical output. The text is CC BY-SA, so only the idea of the sequence is used here, never the wording.
