Shakespeare-Grammatik (1st ed., Halle a. S.: Niemeyer, 1898–1900; 2nd revised ed., Heidelberg: Winter, 1909)

What it is about

A German-language descriptive grammar of the English of Shakespeare, written as a historical comparison with spoken educated English of the author's day. It is not an exhaustive analysis; it lists the forms that had died out by the early 17th century and contrasts them with modern usage. The first volume is numbered in paragraphs: numerals (§83–90), adverbs (§91–102 and §225–305), article (§110–131), pronouns (§132–224) and prepositions (§306–392), with a separate list of abbreviations. The second volume (1909) is an enlarged and corrected edition. The text here is an automatic OCR of the scans, so some words are garbled. This card rests on the table of contents, the preface and the section headings; I did not read the chapter bodies in full.

Ideas

For Mova

Chapters: 3. Pronouns, 04-verb-endings.md, 06-strong-verbs.md, 10-vocabulary.md. Code: en/src/emode.rs, en/src/morph.rs (morph::archaic), en/src/dict.rs. Measure: coverage of the closed Early Modern table against the forms the grammar lists, and accuracy of lemma assignment on the gold list. Use the grammar as a source of examples, not as a source of rules to copy: the German prose and the OCR are a poor base for automatic extraction.
