Some General Remarks on Interactions between Aspect, Modality, and Evidentiality in Biblical Hebrew

What it is about

A short programmatic essay: instead of the old tense-versus-aspect debate, the Hebrew verb should be studied where aspect, modality and evidentiality meet. Deontic modality ("let him …") is carried by the short prefix form (jussive), which is clause-initial and negated with אַל; epistemic modality ("he may/will …") by the long prefix form, clause-medial and negated with לֹא; weak roots still keep the two apart (יִבֶן vs יִבְנֶה). Since the short form is also the ancestor of the perfective wayyiqtol, Hebrew ties deontic modality to perfective and epistemic to imperfective aspect, against the pattern often drawn from Slavonic. Evidentiality is marked mainly by הִנֵּה with a participle (direct perception: "and behold, the he-goat was coming", Dan 8:5) and perhaps by qatal with לֵאמֹר; the participle drifts toward the present. The paper is a sketch with a handful of examples and no counts.

Ideas

For Mova

I1 and I3 belong to The verb (volitives, the long and short prefix forms) and need MACULA's jussive/imperfect tags plus word position from the trees. I2 is a candidate rule for tools/macula/src/prag.rs and a point for 09-discourse.md (וְהִנֵּה), measured against JPS "behold … was …".
