A Critical Engagement with the Biblical Hebrew Verbal System Theories of John Cook and Jan Joosten by Applying Aspect Prominent Theory and Relative Tense Theory to Psalms 1–41

What it is about

The thesis compares two recent models of the Hebrew verb on one test set. For Cook, yiqtol is mainly an imperfective aspect form; for Joosten, a modal (irrealis) form within a relative-tense system. After a history of research (Ewald–Driver, comparative, discourse, tense and aspect schools), the author lists each model's functions of yiqtol, derives criteria for recognizing them, and classifies every yiqtol in Psalms 1–41 under both models, with statistics and a full appendix table. Cases neither model fits (archaic forms, poetic preterite uses) are discussed separately. A main lesson is that "context decides" should be replaced by explicit criteria; for example, a yiqtol is a past (preterite) when it stands in a chain with a preceding perfective qatal or, most reliably, between preterite wayyiqtol forms (Ps 18:7–15, 40).

Ideas

For Mova

I1 is a candidate rule for the tense/aspect features that tools/macula adds and for The verb (yiqtol, the aspect–tense debate) and 02-cantillation-adjacent poetry notes. I2 is a count for 06-verb.md, measured with the JPS alignment. I3 is already Mova's style; the thesis gives a ready set of criteria to encode in tools/macula/src/prag.rs comments and the manual.
