Corpus-Driven Visualization of Textual Worlds
What it is about
A project description of the EuroPLOT image database: close to 5 000 high-resolution photographs of places, objects and customs of the biblical world (Israel-Palestine and neighbouring lands), each tagged with motif, historical period, photographer, date and Bible references, free for non-commercial use. The images are linked into Bible Online Learner (built on the ETCBC database) so that a learner reading a verse sees relevant pictures as scaffolding; the Flood story (Gen 6–9) is the case shown. The planned extension links each image to a Hebrew or Greek dictionary entry, so that any occurrence of the word can show it, with stable resource names (URNs) to connect to other collections such as Wikimedia Commons. The rationale comes from literacy, cognitive load theory and learning-style research.
Ideas
- I1. Link Torah dictionary entries for concrete nouns (animals, plants, objects, places: תֵּבָה, גֹּפֶר, עֹרֵב, יוֹנָה, אֲרָרָט) to openly licensed images (public domain or CC BY on Wikimedia Commons) by a stable identifier (Wikidata QID), so the dictionary and the Torah course can show them; the link lives in the dictionary row, not in the text.
- I2. Tag dictionary entries with a concreteness/semantic-field flag (animal, plant, artefact, place, person) as the hook for such links and for the world's object types.
For Mova
I1 and I2 are for the Torah dictionary (macula dict) and The lexicon (semantic fields, names), and for the Torah course (13-mova-tools.md §10). The EuroPLOT images themselves are non-commercial and stay out of anything Mova builds; only openly licensed images may be linked.
