Vom x-qatal zur Informationsstruktur – und retour. Bemerkungen zur Analyse althebräischer Sätze in der Poesie (From x-qatal to information structure – and back again)
What it is about
A short German note on how Ancient Hebrew clauses in poetry are analysed. Research first looked only at whether a verb stands first or not (the "x" before qatal/yiqtol), then at what fills the slot before the verb, then at information structure (topic–comment, focus–background), though without native speakers some tests cannot be run. The author criticises the "compound nominal clause" label: calling every noun-first clause nominal and stative fails because noun-first clauses with yiqtol often express wishes, intentions or instructions, not states (Ps 9:8–9 is the example). He then discusses Blum's inversion pairs (wayyiqtol ↔ x-qatal for perfective; weqatal ↔ x-yiqtol for imperfective) and a problem case, qatal followed by w-qatal in the same line of a psalm (Ps 27:2): either imperfective "relative simultaneity" or ellipsis of the fronted x.
Ideas
- I1. Never classify a clause as verbless because a noun comes first: if it holds a finite verb, the verb is the root and the noun is fronted (topic or focus). A check over the trees: count clauses whose first word is a noun and which contain a finite verb, and confirm none is tagged as a nominal clause.
- I2. Write Blum's inversion pairs as a rule for reading verb forms: when an x is fronted, wayyiqtol becomes x-qatal and weqatal becomes x-yiqtol, with the same aspect. Use it in the tense/aspect gloss so that a fronted-subject qatal in narrative is read as part of the past sequence, not as a perfect.
- I3. Mark qatal + w-qatal pairs in poetry as ambiguous (sequence vs. ellipsis of the fronted constituent), rather than forcing one reading.
For Mova
I1 is a check on the head rules in 13. Biblical Hebrew in Mova: the tools §6 and a point for 08-syntax.md (verbless clauses). I2 goes into 06-verb.md (the aspect–tense debate) and into the verb-form features used by tools/macula/src/prag.rs. I3 is a note for the poetry part of 09-discourse.md.
