Negating the infinitive in Biblical Hebrew
What it is about
אֵין with an infinitive construct is usually listed as a feature of Late Biblical Hebrew and used to date texts late. The author collects all instances and shows that they are not one construction. אֵין may mean non-existence ("there was no man to till the ground", Gen 2:5, where the infinitive is a complement) or be a plain negative. As a negative it forms an impersonal construction, "there is no V-ing" (Est 4:2, Est 8:8, Hag 1:6), with nuances of no permission or no possibility, and a personal one with the subject in a lə- phrase ("the Levites no longer need to carry", 1 Chr 23:26). Several cases are ambiguous between the readings. Surface word order does not matter; constituent structure does. The distribution — Esther, Haggai, Chronicles, Ecclesiastes, but also standard texts — gives no solid ground for calling the construction late.
Ideas
- I1. Three readings of אֵין + (lə-)infinitive in the trees and the gloss: (a) existential "there is no one to V" (infinitive as a dependent of the noun or of אֵין); (b) impersonal "one may not / cannot V"; (c) personal, with a lə- subject, "X need not / cannot V". Write the patterns into the particles chapter with Torah examples (Gen 2:5 is in our data).
- I2. Do not use אֵין + infinitive as a lateness marker in any dating measure; list it among features the comparison chapter treats as inconclusive.
For Mova
I1 goes into Pronouns, particles and prepositions (negatives) and 08-syntax.md (infinitives, negation), and as a gloss rule for macula dict examples. I2 is a caution for 12-biblical-mishnaic-modern.md.
