Gemination and degemination in English affixation
What it is about
The book asks when an English prefix or suffix lengthens a consonant at the morpheme boundary (as in unnatural, innumerous) and when it does not. It studies five affixes: un-, negative in-, locative in-, dis- and -ly. It combines a corpus study with an acoustic measurement experiment, and tests predictions of formal theories of the morpho-phonology interface against psycholinguistic ones built on decomposability and informativeness. Gemination is found to be categorical and governed mostly by the affix: un- geminates strongly, -ly does not, and the other affixes lie in between, with stress affecting some of them. The two studies agree on the ranking, and the author reports a gemination hierarchy un- > {in- Neg, in- Loc} > dis- > -ly. The segmentability of an affix predicts its duration; word-specific decomposability effects are small.
Ideas
- I1.
en/src/morph.rs: encode the two segmentability hierarchies the book derives (non-semantic and semantic) as a fixed rank table over prefixes and suffixes, and use it as a tie-break when the lemmatiser must decide whether to strip un-, dis-, in- or -ly. Keep the table in BTreeMap order and measure the change on a held-out list of derived words, run twice. - I2. Spelling is not a reliable cue for the morphological boundary here, since the book finds gemination does not depend on orthography. Treat doubled letters in a written form as weak evidence only, and add a negative control: words with the same spelling but a non-affixal root (e.g. innocent) must not be split.
- I3. Use the book's per-affix ranking as an explicit, explainable feature in
worldwhen the reader derives a headword from a prefixed form, so each decision can say which affix rule fired and how segmentable it is.
For Mova
The relevant chapters are 16. Derivation I: prefixes (un-, dis-, in-) and 17. Derivation II: suffixes (-ly). The code is en/src/morph.rs. Phonetic results are not usable in Mova (it works on text), so only the segmentability ranking and the affix-level stratification are carried over. Measure the stripping accuracy of en/src/morph.rs per affix, before and after the ranking tie-break.
