A First Look at the Ugaritic Poetic Text Corpus
What it is about
The EUPT project is building an open digital edition of the Ugaritic poetic texts (planned: 68 tablets, about 4,000 lines, by 2032). Each text is stored as TEI-style XML in three linked trees: an epigraphic tree of the tablet (lines, segments), a philological tree of clauses, phrases and words with lemma and morphology, and a poetological tree of stanzas, verses and cola. The trees share no strings; they point to each other through unique IDs, and the clause is the unit that links the philological and poetological layers. Uncertainty is marked as data: low-certainty words, damaged signs, surplus, deleted and corrected signs. At the time of the paper only one tablet was fully digitised.
Ideas
- I1. Keep uncertainty as data. The EUPT markup for low certainty, damage and corrections suggests that unpointed Hebrew in
tools/ocrfixand the unpointed mode oftools/hboshould keep the alternative readings as tagged options instead of choosing one silently. - I2. Put line or colon structure in its own layer. In poetry a verse line often does not match a syntactic unit, so the paper keeps poetic structure separate and links it by ID. Do the same for poetic books in the discourse layer.
- I3. Store the layers as separate trees linked by IDs, not as one merged tree. This fits the tree store design, where a token can point to its phrase, its clause and its line.
For Mova
I1 goes into tools/ocrfix and tools/hbo (unpointed mode). I2 belongs in Discourse: narrative, speech and the shape of a text (poetic structure of Psalms and Job). I3 is a design note for the world store, and a check on the ID links in prag.
