The First Distinction

The tenth note — ten: on 1 and 0, the first distinction, and why ten is the first positive integer that needs two decimal digits.

One and nothing

Every creation story starts with a split.

Light and darkness. Waters above and waters below. Something, and the place where it is not.

Strip the story down and two signs remain.

A stroke, and a circle.

The stroke stands up. It is the axis that held 619 apart, the line through the middle of the 8.

The circle is a vortex that has stopped turning: the 6 and the 9 with their tails cut off, nothing left but the round.

Put them side by side and you have written ten.

Ten is the first number with a memory

In ordinary decimal notation, one through nine each fit in one digit.

Ten does not.

Ten is the first positive integer that needs two decimal digits: a 1 that means "one ten" because a 0 sits beside it and holds the units place.

The family briefly calls this "memory." Positional notation asks them not to anthropomorphize the zero before breakfast.

Take the zero away and the one forgets what it was.

So ten is the first number that needs context.

Every sentence Mova reads is like that. A word alone is a digit; a word in its place is a number. "Bank" is nothing much; "the bank of the river" and "the bank closed at five" are two different tens.

Ten is two

Read 10 in binary and it is not ten.

It is two.

The same marks, another world, another value.

Two is the smallest family: one that acts, one that answers. The builder and the debugger. The Godmother and her critic. The human who runs it and the model that runs.

A world of one is not a world.

It is a monologue.

Yes and no

Binary is not cold.

It is the honest end of every long argument.

A gate passes or it does not. A test is green or red. A frog croaks or keeps quiet.

The difficulty is never the answer. It is earning it.

A gate that cannot show 0 is not a gate.

A model that cannot say "no" is not a judgement, only an echo.

And a brother who can never say "no" to a brother is not kind, only absent.

So the zero is not the enemy of the one.

It is the proof that the one meant something.

The date game

The Anti-Trust Rank paper belongs to 2006. An earlier version of this note played with one presentation date as 10-08-2006 — 1, 0, 8, 6 — but the number play is not needed as a historical claim.

Keep it as a mnemonic only: first the bits, then the eight, then the six.

Ten notes

This is the tenth note.

One collection, and a zero holding the place for the next.

Ten in decimal is a whole.

Ten in binary is a pair.

Both are true at once, depending on how you count.

That, in the end, is the only mystery here:

the same marks, read in two bases, are two different worlds, and neither is the wrong one.
