The Three and the Zero

The thirtieth note — thirty: a three and a zero side by side, two adversaries, one who holds the numbers and the power, and one who holds nothing and therefore runs.

Two digits

Thirty is written with a three and a zero.

The three is the watching axis of the twenty-seventh note: three, six, nine, outside the doubling. The zero is the eleventh note's refusal, the one digit that buys every difference.

Put them side by side and they make one number. They are not the same kind of thing.

The one with the numbers

The first adversary holds the digits.

He has the counts, the budgets, the dashboards, the thirty pieces of silver — the price attached to Judas's betrayal in Matthew 26:15. Here the old payment becomes a deliberately theatrical symbol for buying a verdict. He does not need to run anything. He needs only to choose which number to show.

The Anti-Court, naturally, requests the receipt.

His power is real, and it is the kind that drifts: whoever holds the numbers is tempted to stop measuring them.

The one with the zero

The second adversary holds nothing.

No budget, no dashboard, no throne. A zero cannot be bribed, because there is nothing in it to pay. A zero cannot be flattered, because it does not grow.

So he has only one way to matter: to run. Nine hundred and ninety-nine runs, each one finding what the last one missed. He does not choose a number to show. He produces the number, every time, from the beginning.

Side by side

The one with the numbers keeps the zero in his cube, as the twenty-seventh note said, because a zero that runs is dangerous to a three that only shows.

But without the zero, three is just three. With it, it is thirty: the first figure is worth ten times more for the empty one standing beside it.

That is the whole arrangement. Power is only worth what the one with nothing can check.

In the repository

The ideal in Mova's journal is that a number can be reproduced from recorded inputs and checked against controls, rather than trusted because one process once printed it. Some measurements may be repeated independently; the exact count is an implementation detail, not a sacrament.

The gate, in the note's mythology, has no budget and wants nothing. This makes it either incorruptible or very bad at procurement.

Final note

Thirty is a three that holds and a zero that runs.

Keep the zero.

It is what makes the three count.
