In 1939 Germany invaded Poland and a war began that spread across the whole world; British children were sent to the countryside with a gas mask and a name label, and Ukraine was one of the places worst hit of all.

One row per clause the reader finds. «not said here»: a role filled from the clause above. «roles by»: a VerbNet class and frame when one fits the verb, else the reader's rules on the tree.
