sense in the lessons

In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: In the Torah it mostly means the Ark of the Covenant, the gold-covered chest in the Tabernacle that held the tablets of the Law. Its lid was the ark-cover, and it was carried on poles called staves. In the Prophets and Writings the Ark is carried to war, captured by the Philistines, guarded by Levite door-keepers, and called the ark of God's strength. Interpretation: Tradition sees the Ark as the holiest object, where God's presence met Moses between the two cherubim above the cover. The psalm that asks God to rise to His resting-place with the Ark is read as being about bringing it into the Temple. Today the cupboard holding the Torah scrolls in a synagogue is called the Ark in memory of it. In the primary lessons: Children's toy arks have animals walking in two by two. The story ends with a rainbow, God's promise never to flood the earth again. In jokes, "out of the ark" means very old-fashioned. Phrases: Noah's ark, the Ark of the Covenant, two by two into the ark, went out with the ark.
