In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: It means hatred and ill will, with the law of the cities of refuge separating killing by accident from killing with hatred. God also places it between the serpent and the woman. Interpretation: Tradition says a killing without enmity was accidental, so the killer could flee to a city of refuge. The curse on the serpent is read as the struggle between good and evil. In the primary lessons: Used in history, Bible and stories: enmity between nations, families or rivals; in Genesis, God puts enmity between the serpent and the woman. In ethics: forgiveness can end enmity; Jesus taught «love your enemies». Phrases: «enmity between», «long enmity», «bitter enmity».
