sense in the lessons
In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: An old, gentle way of saying a person died, used for Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. In Samuel it also means that a set time had run out. Interpretation: The rabbis noted that this word is used only of the righteous, and that being "gathered to his people" shows that life goes on beyond death. In Samuel, "the days were not expired" means the time Saul set for David had not yet ended. In the primary lessons: In hospitals and official reports «the patient expired» hides the plain word «died» behind a cool, technical word; it is jargon and can sound cold. In everyday life the commonest sense is about cards, tickets, food and passwords running out. All regions.

note
Trap: «expired» about a person means died, but about food or tickets it means no longer valid; check what the subject is. Said of a person in everyday talk it can sound cold or funny. In maths problems, «expires after 30 days» is a time limit for counting days.
