In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: Dan marched last among the tribes; Amalek attacked the weak stragglers at the back. Interpretation: Dan, as the rear guard, was said to gather the lost and stray. Amalek's cowardly attack on the weak became a lasting symbol of cruelty, remembered before Purim.
