part of speech

noun (library, libraries)

meaning for a pupil

2) A library is also a room in a school or house where books are kept. tree →

3) A library is a collection of books, music or games that someone owns. tree →

sense in the lessons

In maths it is a place with books counted on shelves, borrowed and returned: borrowed books are taken away, returned books are added back, and books per shelf × shelves gives the total. In everyday life children get a library card, borrow books for a few weeks and return them by the due date; you keep quiet so others can read.

note

Plural: «libraries» (y changes to ies). Spelling trap: two r's, «li-brar-y» (not «libary»). False friend: in some languages a similar word means a bookshop; a library lends books, a bookshop sells them. A librarian works in a library. Maths: books per shelf × shelves gives the total.
