meaning for a pupil

A person who predicts what will happen in the future, here by watching the stars. tree →

sense in the lessons

In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: Isaiah mocks the "monthly prognosticators" of Babylon, who told the future by the stars and the months. They cannot save her from the coming fall. Interpretation: The tradition teaches that Israel should trust God and not star-reading. The prophet shows that such fortune-telling has no power.

examples

  • Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels; let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from the things that shall come upon thee. (Prophets ISA.47.13, JPS 1917) tree →
