meaning for a pupil

Cooked by boiling, or soaked through with water. Here it is an old form of "boiled". tree →

sense in the lessons

In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: Boiled in water, an old past form of "seethe". The Passover lamb may not be boiled but only roasted, and pots used for sacrifices had to be broken or scoured so no holy food stayed in them. In Lamentations women boiled their own children in the terrible hunger when Jerusalem was destroyed, and in Samuel the priest's servant demanded raw meat to roast, not boiled. Interpretation: The rule about roasting the Passover lamb is read as a sign of haste and freedom, and the rules about vessels show how seriously holiness and cleanliness are treated. Lamentations is read as showing the horror of the siege, and the story in Samuel shows how Eli's sons' servants broke the rules for sacrifices.
