In the Tanakh and Jewish tradition: In the Torah it is the purpose of the priests' holy garments, which were made to give honor and dignity to the office. In the Prophets and Writings it describes the glory of God, His majesty and His works, and the beauty God gives to Jerusalem, which Ezekiel calls "My splendour." In Sefer Yetzirah it is the shining brightness of the divine lights. Interpretation: Tradition reads the priestly garments as showing that the service of God deserves dignity and beauty. The later books show that all true splendour is seen as coming from God, who may place it on His people. Kabbalists linked splendour (Hod) to one of the divine powers through which God's influence flows.
