part of speech

noun (cider, ciders; usually uncountable)

meaning for a pupil

1) (UK, Ireland, Australia, NZ) An alcoholic drink made from the juice of crushed apples, a bit like beer in strength. tree →

2) (USA, Canada) Cloudy apple juice that has not been filtered, often drunk hot in autumn; it has no alcohol unless called «hard cider». tree →

sense in the lessons

In everyday life children meet cider at autumn fairs, apple orchards, harvest festivals and Halloween in North America (hot apple cider with cinnamon), and as an adult drink in pubs in the UK and Ireland. In science lessons it shows fermentation: yeast turns the sugar in apple juice into alcohol and gas. Phrases: «hot cider», «hard cider», «apple cider vinegar», «cider press», «a pint of cider». In stories it often sets a cosy autumn or country scene (Somerset farms, orchards).

examples

  • We drank hot apple cider at the pumpkin patch. tree →
  • In Canada, cider at the farm stand is just thick apple juice. tree →
  • My uncle ordered a pint of cider at the pub. tree →
  • Cider is for grown-ups in England because it contains alcohol. tree →
  • The farmer put the apples into the cider press. tree →
  • Yeast turns the sugar in apple juice into alcohol, and that is how cider is made. tree →

  • Which do you like, canary, St. Julien, champagne, hermitage sack, raisin, or cider?’ tree →

note

Spelled with a C, not «sider». Usually uncountable («some cider»), but «a cider» means a glass or bottle of it. The big trap is the meaning: in the USA and Canada «cider» is usually non-alcoholic juice, while in the UK, Ireland, Australia and NZ it is an alcoholic drink, so a recipe or story may mean different things. «Hard cider» (US) is the alcoholic one. Apple cider vinegar is not a drink.
