iii

«iii» in Mova's school dictionary: the Roman numeral for 3, written with three I's — its meaning for a pupil, its sense in the lessons and examples.

part of speech

numeral (III — Roman numeral); fragment

meaning for a pupil

1) III is the Roman numeral for 3, written with three I's. tree →

2) After a name, III means «the third», as in Henry III or John Smith III. tree →

3) It can number a part or chapter: Part III, Act III. tree →

sense in the lessons

In maths lessons, Roman numerals use letters: I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, so III = 3 and IV = 4. On clocks, III marks three o'clock. In history, kings and queens are numbered with Roman numerals: Richard III is said «Richard the Third». Common forms: «Part III», «Henry III», «Chapter III».

examples

  • The clock shows III where the number 3 would be. tree →
  • Richard III was king of England. tree →
  • Read Chapter III for homework. tree →
  • III + II = V in Roman numerals. tree →
  • My cousin is called Robert Jones III, after his dad and grandad. tree →
  • The film had a sequel called «Part III». tree →
  • In Roman numerals, III means three ones added together. tree →

note

Usually written in capitals: III. Read it aloud as «three», or «the third» after a name. It is not a word. Trap in maths: four is written IV (one before five), not IIII, though some clocks use IIII.
