part of speech

verb (know, knows, knew, knowing, known)

meaning for a pupil

1) To know something is to have it in your mind as a fact, because you learned it or were told. tree →

2) To know a person is to have met them and be familiar with them. tree →

3) To know how to do something is to be able to do it: She knows how to swim. tree →

4) To know a place is to be familiar with it. tree →

sense in the lessons

In maths, a word of the story or the question («do you know how many…»); no operation; «what do we know?» lists the given facts. In science, what we know comes from observing and testing. In everyday life and safety: know your address, know your way home, never go with people you don't know. Phrases: «I don't know», «you know», «know how to», «get to know», «let me know», «as far as I know».

examples

note

Irregular: know, knew, known; the k is silent. Do not confuse know with no, knew with new, knows with nose — they sound the same. No clue on its own; «knows 20, learns 5 more» adds. Trap: «we know that…» introduces a fact to use, not a new amount.
