sense in the lessons
In maths it is a set of items or numbers to count, add, order or find the biggest of; it has no operation on its own; the question says what to do. In everyday life: a shopping list, a to-do list, a class list, a spelling list, a birthday wish list. In writing, items in a list are joined by commas.

note
Countable. Regular verb: listed. «Listen» is a different word, though it looks close. Maths: the question says whether to add, order or count the items. Trap: count the items, not the numbers in their names (a list of «3 eggs, 2 apples» has 2 items).
