remainder
part of speech
noun (remainder, remainders)
meaning for a pupil
1) The remainder is what is left over when a number cannot be divided exactly. 13 divided by 4 is 3 with a remainder of 1. tree →
2) The remainder of something is the rest of it, the part still left: «the remainder of the day». tree →
sense in the lessons
In school maths: the amount left over after equal sharing or grouping (written «r»: 23 ÷ 5 = 4 r 3); also «the remainder» meaning the rest after taking a part. The remainder is always smaller than the number you divide by. In everyday life: «the remainder of the week», «the remainder of the cake». Phrases: «with a remainder of», «no remainder», «the remainder of».
examples
- 23 ÷ 5 = 4 remainder 3. tree →
- How many apples are in the remainder? tree →

- 29 children in groups of 6, how many are left as the remainder? tree →
- 20 ÷ 4 has no remainder. tree →

note
Do not confuse with «reminder» (something that helps you remember). The remainder must be less than the divisor; if it is not, you can share more. Maths: signals division with leftovers, or «the rest» after taking a part. Trap: sometimes the remainder needs one more box or bus (round up), sometimes it is dropped.
In the corpora
- Divide, and if there is a remainder, add one.
- Divide and leave out the remainder.
- Dividing with a remainder gives full groups and some left over: 50 ÷ 8 = 6 remainder 2.
- But if the question asks how many full boxes, the remainder is simply left out: 50 eggs fill 6 boxes of 8.
