Do no harm
Gist. Human life, health and dignity are the highest value; do not cause harm or pain.
Conditions and exceptions. Defending yourself or another from attack is not a violation. Treatment that hurts for a while (a vaccination) is not harm. An accident without anyone's intent is harm, but not guilt.
Examples.
- The Wolf and the Lamb (Aesop): the wolf looks for a pretext to eat the lamb. The strong harm the weak.
- Newton under the tree: an apple fell on his head — it hurt, but nobody is to blame (harm without guilt).
Sources. Aesop's fables; "you shall not murder" (Ex 20:13); Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Art. 3.
