A Hierarchy with, of, and for Preposition Supersenses
What it is about
English prepositions are frequent and very polysemous, and in many uses they mark a role rather than a place or time. The authors propose a hierarchical taxonomy of preposition supersenses: coarse, unlexicalised categories for the function a preposition marks (spatial, temporal, purpose, configuration and so on). The taxonomy is built from the fine-grained senses of The Preposition Project (TPP), with 34 prepositions and 332 fine senses. Of these, 285 map to one or more supersenses, and the resource grows to 309 preposition types and 797 senses. The paper gives the definitions, examples and mappings to other resources. The earlier TPP coarse grouping had a Cohen's kappa of 0.75, and a pilot English annotation of the taxonomy is reported as underway.
Ideas
- I1.
en/src/expert.rs: write a small rule table for the top prepositions (of, in, on, at, for, to, with) that maps a preposition plus its governor and object class to a coarse supersense (for example "in" with a time noun is temporal). Measure accuracy on the tokens of the 2016 corpus of the same authors (test only if its licence limits use), and on EWT prepositions. - I2. Multiword prepositions (because of, instead of, according to) stay separate tokens, as UD wants, but get one supersense through a span list in the in-code dictionary, joined in the tree by
fixed. Measure how many such units EWT test has and how oftenen/src/parse.rsgives them thefixedarcs, before any label is assigned. - I3. Governed prepositions: mark prepositions that a verb selects (case-marker use) as a separate class in
en/src/parse.rsoutput, using the verb's frame inworld/src/frames.rs. Measure the share of selected prepositions on EWT.
For Mova
The touch points are en/src/expert.rs (rules), en/src/tok.rs (multiword units), en/src/parse.rs (governor), and world/src/frames.rs (verb frames). The chapter is 22. Phrases: noun, adjective, adverb and prepositional phrases, with 23. Complementation for selected prepositions and 21. The simple clause. The paper's data is NC-licensed; it is used for tests, and the taxonomy and its definitions are the part to re-use. Measure first the rule table on the top prepositions against EWT.
