Papers

  1. Multitiered Nonlinear Morphology Using Multitape Finite Automata: A Case Study on Syriac and Arabic (2000)
Semitic root-and-pattern morphology, such as the Syriac stems built from the root {ktb} with different patterns and a passive marked by the reflexive prefix, does not fit two-level morphology, which assumes that a surface form is a concatenation of lexical morphemes.
  2. Multi-Tape Two-Level Morphology: A Case Study in Semitic Non-Linear Morphology (1994)
Semitic stems are built by interleaving a consonantal root with a vowel melody inside a CV pattern, and standard two-level morphology (Koskenniemi 1983) cannot describe that directly.
