Papers

  1. Predicate Catenae: A Dependency Grammar Analysis of It-Clefts (2019)
An it-cleft such as "It was herself that Susan critiqued" has two finite verbs, yet the reflexive in the matrix clause is licensed by "Susan" in the embedded clause.
  2. Control vs. Raising in English. A Dependency Grammar Account (2017)
The paper argues that a dependency grammar cannot tell control predicates (prefer, ask, pretty) from raising predicates (seem, expect, tough) by tree shape alone, because both take a to-infinitive and get the same flat structure.
