Papers

  1. Is It \textit JUST Semantics? A Case Study of Discourse Particle Understanding in LLMs (2025)
The English discourse particle "just" has several senses: exclusive ("Betsy just eats chicken nuggets"), temporal ("just arrived"), unelaboratory ("Fido is just a dog"), unexplanatory ("the lights just turn on and off") and emphatic ("just delicious").
  2. The Possible, the Plausible, and the Desirable: Event-Based Modality Detection for Language Processing (2021)
The paper defines event-based modality detection: find every modal trigger in a sentence, of any part of speech (should, plan, prefers, probably, necessary, able), give it a sense, and link it to the head of the event it modifies.
  3. QANom: Question-Answer driven SRL for Nominalizations (2020)
QANom extends QA-SRL from verbs to nouns derived from verbs: a noun like proof or increase is questioned with its verb's question templates («What has someone proved?», «Why did something increase?») and answered with spans of the sentence.
